Position Description

Designers perform outside plant infrastructure design for power utility companies. The Designer should have knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures in electrical and/or civil engineering environments and will rely on standards, instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.  This individual works with immediate supervision.

The Designer will:

  • Execute work orders for outside plant facilities while meeting quality, time and budget constraints
  • Visually identify, inspect, and record equipment and structures in the right-of-way
  • Select and interpret data based on design intent
  • Apply engineering design standards to underground and aerial pole line cable plant
    • Make ready
    • Joint Use Design
    • Pole Replacement
    • Power Distribution Design
  • Analyze and produce cost effective design solutions
  • Perform 2-D Civil type design in CAD (AutoCAD, Micro Station)
  • Resolve anticipated construction problems through drawings
  • Coordinate and plan design and drafting projects
  • Apply NESC Standards
  • Collaborate with others (project managers, other engineers, designers, drafters, administration) to learn how to devise best infrastructure solutions

  • Education or Experience in a Civil field. i.e., Bachelor’s of Science in Civil/Electrical Engineering OR Associates Degree in Civil Technology OR equivalent civil technology military training equivalent OR equivalent technical experience in a civil or utility field
  • Must possess CAD Experience
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions
  • Must be able to endure frequent: Driving, standing, walking long distances (up to 5 miles or more in a day), navigating rough terrain on foot and lifting/balancing objects that may weigh up to ~20 lbs. and require the use of upper extremities and back muscles; work in proximity to moving vehicles in the right of way.
  • Must have dependable transportation and valid driver’s license and insurance
  • Must be able to pass a background check/drug test/driving record check
  • Must be computer literate – especially Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Must be willing to travel overnight regularly
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States


  • One to three years Utility (Power, Telecom, Water, Natural Gas, etc.) Outside Plant or Civil (Transportation, Structural, Geotechnical, Surveying) industry drafting experience
  • Strong technical knowledge and skills
  • Ability to learn and operate customer based proprietary software and other computer systems to expedite and facilitate the work order process
  • Knowledge of construction and planning procedures
  • Ability to read and comprehend engineering schematics
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Basic financial skills to assist in making sound business decisions

Pay is commensurate with experience and education.
